PINE – THE PLANT
Scots Pine or Norwegian Pine. Scientific name: Pinus Sylvestris. Description: Tall evergreen coniferous tree of the Pinaceae family, with 100 species. Origins: Native in Northern Europe and Russia, and now also growing widely in N. America. History: References from ancient Greece and Rome about its use as strong antiseptic, tonic and anti-oxidant. References to use of the tree as a symbol of masculinity and fertility.
